Next Generation
Yesterday Kiwilizzie suggested that we head for a wetland area today to take some photos, so this morning I picked her up and we set out for Westport and the Orowaiti Estuary.
Driving down the Buller Gorge a weka ran out in front of me and committed suicide under the wheels of my car. It was a sad moment. I love seeking wekas and I hated the thought of having killed one.
To make up for it a little, and with thanks to Kiwilizzie for spotting them, this is a capture of 2 weka babies that we found near the beach at Westport. Mum and one of the babies ran across the road in front of us, but this time I managed to avoid being the cause of another bird funeral.
On our way home we stopped at The Town House in Wesport for a seriously good late lunch. Fantastic food, I highly reccommend it. Even if everything else hadn't been wonderful (which it was!) the ginger icecream had me in raptures. Worth the hour and a half drive to Wesport for that alone.
Here is a link to information about Wekas for those of you who don't know what an adult looks like. They're friendly birds and, like magpies, are acquisitive and often steal things from around camp sites.
