Splash. Statue of Sir Tom Finney.
Driving past the Splash today, I noticed that the sun was shining on Sir Tom and highlighted the marvellous patina of the statue. My dad took me to see Sir Tom, plain Tom then, play in a testimonial for his former team mate, Willie Cunningham. That was a halcyon day. A sort of rites of passage thing.Going to the footie with your dad. I don't remember much of the game, but I certainly remember the day fondly. We lived very close to the ground and can also remember the run up to playing West Ham in the F.A Cup final. I think we beat Spurs at home. I can remember being so nervous waiting for the fans coming home from the game after nine thirty p.m. Then it was faster to get the results from the fans on the way home.
The last time I saw Sir Tom, his son Brian brought him to the game, and he met up with Trevor Hemmings.
Apologies for the image, it's the best I could do under the circumstances. How would Sir Tom have compared with the players of today? Who knows?
Adios.
