The Marigold Army.....
..... reclaiming the streets, demonstrating:
- that there are plenty of people with social responsibility in this city
- that we will not live in a culture of fear because of the minority
- that social networking can work in a positive way too; @riotcleanup
Rarely have I seen such acts of kindness, humanity, and quiet determination, despite 10 years on the sharp end of doctoring. The 20 minute transformation from a scene reminiscent of post-apocalyptic desolation to a sparkling, almost-new shininess (save a few windows) was a thing to behold. To watch the locals' and shop-keepers emotions flip so quickly from despair to happiness is something I'll never forget.
Some more here......
I'm not going to speculate on the causes behind this violence; that's for the future. I just feel lucky and proud to have been able to participate in my small way towards the resilience of London today.
And one last thing, on an unusually long blip..... I want to celebrate all my fellow public sector workers who are heading through potential and actual riot zones tonight, because babies still need delivering, lives still need saving, and they just have no choice but to get to work. Simply amazing.
