why...?

Admittedly, I am not the most savvy or "street smart", as it were, but what exactly am I missing here? Why is the back chunk of a couch worth cutting out and toting away? Is there something important I need to know here, so that I won't be made a fool next time there is a FULL couch on the street? If it is that awesome, maybe I wanna get there first!! ;)
