The Foot
Sadly this is all that's left of Steve Ovetts statue in Preston Park in Brighton. As the park prepares for the Pride weekend, fences go up around the flower beds to protect them from the exuberance of the weekend Proudsters but poor old Steve gets no such security. The deed has already been done!
For those who don't know who Steve was, he was a Brighton based runner and one of the few British Olympians who won Gold medals for in "non-sitting' sports in the early 80's. Ovett got the 800m in Moscow while Coe took the 1500m.
The rivalry was bit like Hamilton an Button in F1. Each had their strengths and each had there followers but at the end of the day they were both both British and were both at the top of their game at the same time.. and a good natured rivalry for the most part.
