Jimmie Cairncross
Today was the naming ceremony of the new RNLI Queensferry lifeboat, the Jimmie Cairncross.
The lifeboat was funded by the generous legacy of the late Mr James Kennaway Cairncross, who saw active service in World War II protecting the Russian convoys on three separate occasions. Miss Alexandra Cairncross officially handed over the new lifeboat to the RNLI at today's ceremony.
His HRH the Duke of Edinburgh christened the new boat with a dram of Talisker Scotch Whisky.
The Jimmie Cairncross is an Atlantic 85, the most powerful inshore lifeboat operated by the charity. It has a maximum speed of 35 knots, two 115 hp engines, has space for 4 volunteer crew and utilises the latest equipment to ensure casualties can be located faster.
The weather was dismal so this was a quick snap before heading back to shelter.
