People on a Bridge

All moved

Yep. Bobo and Son House Movers did their magic yesterday, and now there is a house on a previously empty corner of my block.

Aside of four corner supports (like the one above), the rest of the structure is supported by a massive rig which sits on 64 wheels (two sets of 32 wheels, all the way across its width). The muddy mini-moat you see is where the concrete foundations have been poured (the wires sticking out are the reinforcements). Now a wall made out of concrete masonry units will be built under the house along its entire perimeter, and the house will be lowered onto it.

I learned a bit of a history behind this whole affair. Apparently, this is THE oldest building on the Mississippi State University's campus, built in the early 1900s. It sat on a site where a new dormitory complex will be built, in accordance with the new campus master plan. The university had a choice to either sell it or move it, but could not demolish it. They couldn't find a buyer. You know the rest.

And now the question for you to ponder: is the house still "historic" after you move it from its original location? I am not even mentioning adding things like central air conditioning...
