Main Guard, The Barbados Garrison

In 1780 the British Military HQ in the Caribbean was established here overlooking the Savannah - a large open area that now houses the Barbados Turf Club and race course. St Ann's Fort had been established near here since 1705. It remained the West Indies Imperial Force HQ until 1905.

This picture is of the Main Guard which has the Coast of Arms of George III manufactured especially in Coade artificial stone.

There is a remarkable collection of military buildings around the Race Track, including the military prison - now Barbados Museum, drill hall, barracks and various houses, including one where George Washington stayed in 1751.
