Green Shaft

I like being able to see how things work and a glass sided lift shaft is a good example of that. You can see all the counter-weights and fail safe brakes etc. Maybe it's a 'boy thing' and possibly harks back, way back, to toys like Meccano. Equally, some of the high-end watches I covert have glass backs so that the precision movement can be seen working.
