White-winged Black Tern
We were up at Grafham Water on Saturday trying to find this chap, but there was a lot of activity on the water and after a couple of hours we gave up and headed home. Today being Monday it was quieter and we approached it with more resolve. It's regularly been seen on the boom off the Fishing Lodge, so we found ourselves a nice picnic bench and settled down. We'd arrived about 11:00, had a couple of drinks around 13:00, had our picnic around 14:00. By 15:00 we were bemoaning the fact we hadn't brought a book.
At 17:00 Lee GR Evans turned up and Mrs L remarked that at least now we'll see the bird. At 17:15 the bird landed on the boom. Although Lee had headed off in the other direction, this does nothing to dispel my theory that the man travels round with a boot full of rare birds releasing them when he arrives at a site - either that or he has an excellent understanding of where and when to be, but that's a boring theory.
