looking from Torcross - view across Slapton Ley

This is taken from Tocross village, the road in the middle between the beach and the Ley, it's the road I drive on to go to and throw work, as you can see i'm very lucky but Torcross has survived some terrible storms that have battered the village. On 11 and 12 January 2001 another bad storm caused the loss of up to five metres of the beachhead along a stretch of beach about 1000 metres in length. Part of the A379 road along Slapton Sands near the village was also destroyed, closing it for three months. on the left is lapton Ley, which is a lagoon, separated from Start Bay by a shingle beach, known as Slapton Sands. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in South West England. It is 1.5 miles long.

In 1854 the coastal road between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth was built passing through Torcross giving a much needed lifeline to the community.
in late 1943, Torcross was evacuated along with many other villages in the South Hams area to make way for 15,000 allied troops who needed the area to practice for the D-Day landings. In the early hours of 28 April 1944 a tragic incident happened during Exercise Tiger, nine German torpedo boats (Schnellboote) alerted by heavy radio traffic intercepted a three mile long convoy of vessels travelling from the Isle of Portland to Slapton Sands to undertake landing rehearsals for D Day, two Tank landing ships were sunk in the engagement and 749 American servicemen died on that night with over 1,000 lives lost over the course of the operation, various eyewitness accounts detail hasty treatment of casualties and unmarked mass graves in Devon fields. There is still very little documentation in official histories about the tragedy. A Sherman amphibious tank and several plaques stand at Torcross car park between Slapton Ley and the beach as a memorial to the men who lost their lives.

Paranormal activity:
residents of the area have reported certain signs of paranormal activity taking place. For example, small things like items being moved and misplaced in houses and shops to larger things like messages being left in a seemingly alien language and cars vanishing. Some reports say it could all be linked to the crop circles that have been found in the surrounding areas over the past few years. There is no evidence for these reports but some residents have taken it upon themselves to set up their own CCTV cameras to get to the truth of the matter.
