water is heavy

What a terrible day to be a garbage man! I apologize for the cheesiness of this shot, but I've always wanted a picture of the truck with our easy-to-see apparel in the rain. My brother and I snoozed the alarm clock to a sunny morning today, but by about 8:30 we were ringing cold water out of those orange gloves and the sun was replaced by a nice New England gray. Although it washes away some of the trash residue that makes me afraid to lick my lips while I'm on the back of that old girl, the rain also adds weight to every topless barrel within minutes of falling. The two of us lift roughly 1,000 barrels a day, just under half of which have no lids, so how much water can 500 trash barrels hold?

In other news, I mailed my visa application out today. Hopefully the South African Consulate won't make a liar out of me! Assuming they don't, this journal will be entirely dedicated to Cape Town, South Africa in about 61 days.
