a wee bit in my shoes...

Three pound coins

Today I learnt a very big lesson..
I was in town and when I was heading into a shop, a lady approached me with her hand open holding three pound coins and asked me something but I just said no and went into the shop.
I want to describe this lady and do not mean any offence by this. She was late 40s, looked very down, her tracksuit was dirty and her skin was dirty etc. To be honest I thought she was looking something from me and that's why I had said no.
However, in the shop I couldn't stop thinking about her so I watched her through the window. She kept approaching different women who all kept shaking their heads no and avoiding her. I left the shop and stood at the next door again watching her. Then she caught my eye and I went up to her. I asked her what she wanted and again she opened her hand with the three pound coins and explained that she wanted tablets from a chemist two doors up. I then conducted a short interview, which looking back after it, this lady probably thought where did this one come from lol. I asked her why she needed the tablets, why she couldn't go into the shop and were these legal (I know cringe..).. She explained that she wasn't allowed into the chemist because of her son's behaviour few years ago and yes the wee counter tablets were totally legal. So I went in, bought the tablets and returned them to her outside. When handing them over I looked straight at her and could hardly speak as she stood there with tears in her eyes. I told her to look after herself, she said thank you and walked on back down the street.
I learnt a huge lesson today and I nearly cried too but with shame. Here was a lady who really needed help and may have stood there a long time asking people, who like me were all saying no.
This lady needed those wee tablets and so many of us weren't prepared to fill that need. My biggest desire is to work with ladies like I met today but yet I still said no, all because I was judging her before I even asked what she needed. I definitely gave myself a huge kick up the rear end and hopefully the next time God sends me one of his kids along to help, I will not have to learn another lesson like today..
