We went to a posh restaurant last night for a friend of C's birthday. It was the first time I had seen grouse on a menu, and since my birthday is The Glorious Twelfth (Aug 12 - grouse-shooting season starts), I felt honour bound to order it.

It was very real. A whole skinned, filleted grouse splayed on a piece of toast soaked in the giblets. A very interesting taste, very rich, very gamey. A bit like a cross between pheasant and pigeon without being as good as either. The others at the table all thought it looked and smelled horrible. However, I ate it all and oddly C, who had eaten skate with a lobster mousse, was up all night calling God on the great white telephone!
