Great writing

I'm finishing off Lady Audley's Secret - a victorian pot-boiler full of telegrams, bigamy, murder, trains and ringlets of hair (in no particular order.) I read this sentence this morning and it was so odd I had to share it. Not very photographic, but there you go.
