The Rug People

Every three years, Folkestone have a arts festival called, strangely, The Triennial. This years is only the second one. The first one was excellent so I went along to have a look at this one too. There don't seem to be as many exhibits as for the first one, but there was still some interesting work.

This one, The Rug People by Paloma Varga Weisz, was one of my favourites - though I'd be hard pushed to find something that I didn't like! It's been placed on the railway tracks of the now disused Harbour Station. It was the station itself that provided the inspiration, with its history of bringing First World War soldier to the harbour to leave for France, and it was the terminus for the Orient Express until 2008.

If you should be in the Folkestone area before 25 September, the Triennial is well worth a visit. Another exhibit worth taking a look at is in the St Mary & St Eanswythe's Church - 100 model ships hanging from the ceiling.

Folkestone, like Margate, is a town that's had a rotten reputation in the past, but it's now vastly improved - the changes in the seven years since I've lived in the South East are really impressive!
