Luaidh
The ladies of the Sgioba Luaidh Inbhirchluaidh, were performing at the Kirn Gala this evening in a wee tent amongst all the local charities which use the event for fund raising. I had seen them before at Auchindrain but as I always love hearing the songs and remember seeing one of the last nearly authentic luaidhs recreated for the camera (in fact I filmed it in South Uist in about 1978 , with the women led by the inimitable Penny Bheag of Iochdar) it was great to stop for a moment, have a banter (and luaidhs were always about banter) and then watch and listen. It was, in addition , intriguing to see the fascinated reaction of some local young people when confronted with something so captivating, so out of their experience and so richly embedded in Gaelic culture.
You can hear and watch the same group on You Tube - they also told me tonight they are just back from Mull and just about to go to Poland !
(But if you don't know what is being done, or what on earth I am talking about, read this first !)
