Back outdoors on the terrace early this morning to tidy up some overgrown plants, admit my fern actually died this time last year and give a half-hearted, refusing to flower clematis an unglamorous black-bag send off.

I was also getting in early with planting bulbs and am now hoping that the plastic netting I've ordered turns up before the bloody squirrels realise lunch has arrived.

Don't know about where you live, but it's autumn here for sure. Leaves are coming off the trees and there's a coolness to the evenings. 'Aye, the nights are fair drawing in...'
