The slow blink of an eye

Driving towards Edinburgh an ambulance with its lights flashing sped past. Immediately I thought of my father and for a moment I couldn't catch my breath for the overwhelming sense of loss I felt. I went from thoughts of Murron's upcoming birthday to the death of my father in the slow blink of an eye. The moment passed and I returned to thinking about birthdays and work and what we would eat for dinner.

He died eighteen years ago and I still miss him.
