Playing with Tate's Balloons
A great day exploring the southern most point of Cornwall. A highlight going to the Tate, St. Ives. I am a patron of the Tate and love that we have these collections throughout the UK.
This piece is called "half the given air in a space" by Martin Creed.
Martin won the Turner prize with the piece Lights on and off (a complex piece).
Creed created this piece in the Tate gallery St. Ives by calculating all the air in this gallery, dividing it in two and filling all the balloons with this amount of air. The balloons make tangible the "space" in the room literally enclosing the air in the balloons. You are allowed to go into the gallery and play with the balloons which are at least 8 feet deep. The balloons are supposed to evoke innocence, childhood and create a playful mood. As you can see from Rick's face, I think Mr. Creed achieved this. Mr. Creed is the same age as Rick, I wonder if he had as much fun playing in these balloons when no one was watching.
Creed has a belief in simplicity, wonder and play as a way of seeing ourselves and renewing ourselves.
I love this picture, however if you want another gratuitous surf shot - check this one out - one of the best days of Photography I have ever had....
Wave Catcher
I am a officially a surfer-dude-chick beach bum... radical! Finished the day listening to a band on the beach with a sundowner cocktail. I could get used to Cornwall life.
