Ramblings and Mutterings

Abertinlais

My plan for today didn't quite work out, so ending up going somewhere right on my doorstep, which I'm ashamed to say I've never been before, Aberdulais Waterfalls and the old tin works that can be found there. At first glance when you pass the entrance to the place, you'd never know that going back hundreds of years it was a hive of activity in producing tin for world consumption, I didn't even know that Aberdulais at that time was actually a town, not a part of Neath as it is now. There has been some sort of works on the site since about the late 1580s, although clearly some of that history has been lost forever.

Reading the stories in the exhibitions it's hard to imagine how people worked in such an environment, and to have really young lads working there as well. Health & Safety would have had a field day if they'd been around in those days.

It's a remarkable place so secluded and out of the way, but well worth a visit.
