One Day Like This

By sennema

Salve Regina!

Still takes getting used to my daily activities while I've only been away on holiday for one week. (Backblipped day 1!) Tonight we got a really pleasant surprise though, the first letter from Regina.

A couple of months ago I saw an ad about how especially young girls in the Global South need extra support. Boys have more and more possibilities, but girls still are 'worth' less: instead of going to school they have to get water or work on the land. After the age of 13, some of them are sold to work in the city, which often means they end up being prostitutes. The ad really hit me so we decided to support a girl. Regina from Ghana has become the face of the support, although the money is being invested in water supplies, education etc. for the whole of the village, so girls get the opportunity to go to school instead of being the supplier of water themselves.

The letter was really sympathetic. Written by her brother (I'd be really surprised if an 8-year-old had this handwriting) she told us about her family and school, but also about the weather. She definitely made us realize how lucky we are living here, being able to work in fulfilling jobs, travel, eat and drink. She puts everything in perspective, and it's a privilege being able to give her more perspective.

We can never do enough though, can we?
