Liver birds
Early morning one of two Liver birds: the seagull who daily patrols his/her ledge outside our 7th-floor window and the teenage girl in the bed opposite. Neither are what you would expect. The gull can readily despatch other intruders on his territory in usual fashion with that vicious beak, but is also protective of his captive food suppliers, watching over them tenderly and occasionally tapping on the window. Yesterday the window was slightly open and he tapped then dropped a white feather in. I admit to saving my sandwich crusts to drop out when no-one's looking.
The other bird is a naturally beautiful 18-year-old Asian Liverpudlian completely against stereotype. Neither brash nor loud, she is elegant, thoughtful and shy, not speaking much except to staff and her parents. No-one seems to know quite what's wrong with her but she's very independent; we crossed twice in the bathroom corridor during the night, me on my crutches, she pushing a drip stand bearing a blood transfusion and a naso-gastric food pump. Such is the contrast in the occupants of this side room, from noisy old crone to patient young one, with me somewhere in between.
