Bringing the News from Nowhere
I'm still feeling in a literary mood following yesterday's book club meeting so where better to visit than one of the best bookshops in the world?
'News from Nowhere' (named after William Morris's 1890 novel) was established in 1974 and has been an important 'alternative' space in Liverpool ever since. As an independent bookshop in a world of corporate giants it faces a daily struggle. As a radical, collectively run, not-for-profit organisation it has it even harder. So, I'm only too happy to sing its praises in public. You can find out more about it here.
I'm also pleased to have an opportunity to mention Leon Rosselson's song 'Bringing The News From Nowhere'.
Rosselson is one of the most important political songwriters of my lifetime and yours too! Check the great man out here.
Some bring the news in a sermon on the mountain
And some bring the news in a blueprint or a bulletin
But I like those who come with the passion of a vision
Like a child with a gift, like a friend with a question.
William Morris was one. In a story, in a song.
In the patterns that he wove
In the colours that he loved
In the hope that he gave
He brought the news from nowhere.
(I hope I've quoted it correctly...)
