The Last Emperor
Walking past a deserted car park near Haymarket (its access blocked by the workmen laying the controversial tram tracks) I was struck by the shape of these lights. Cropped in tight, they reminded me of the film The Last Emperor and the bespectacled Pu Yi. I loved the closing scene of that film - I won't spoil it if you've never seen it. It's a great film, now approaching twenty-five years old. Despite being over two and a half hours long, I can remember it being one of those occasions in the cinema when time just raced by. It won 9 oscars.
