Manchester Ship Canal.........

This is a view of the Manchester Ship Canal , taken from our swing bridge in Stockton Heath, looking towards Manchester .
This canal is 36 miles long, and opened in 1894 , to link the Port of Manchester with Liverpool. It has a fascinating history , so google it and have a read.
The canal is undergoing a revival , and there are plans for an increase in freight .
Our crossing is only a few hundred yards away, and when ships are due , the barriers go down and the swing bridge opens. Its a great sight to see a huge ship sail through. The traffic chaos is terrible and I have been caught in it too many times to mention !
At weekends , during the summer months , Mersey Ferries operate a tour along the length of the Canal . We did this many years ago, starting in Salford Quays and ending up in Liverpool. The trees will be turning into beautiful colours in the coming weeks, so I will remember to take another shot to share with you.
