TIMES, TIDES & SEASONS

Birding is a bit of a Time, tide & Seasonal thing and for me at the Christchurch Estuary its very much a season for the White Faced Heron.

We await the Godwits to arrive from Siberia and the Kingfishers have decreased in abundance - I'm guessing to make their nests etc.
Even the Shags are a bit scarce and they will be making nests too.
I'll try for a nest next week.

I do like the White Faced heron and find them very graceful. I suppose I took around 30 shots today and I got it down to about three possibles - a fighting pair, a flyer and this feeder with a crab.

I thought the timing and clarity of the head, eye and crab-in-mouth on this one was OK and consequently it won the BLIP- day!

The white faced heron (ardea novaehollandiae) is self introduced to NZ from Australia around 1940 - lays 3-5 light blue with chalky marked eggs.

I suppose this Aussie might consider its a local now - yeah right ??
