Poverty Blind Spot
It's amazing (and sad) really how people can simply (choose to) not see the suffering around them.
The contrast between the nonchalant driver of the big SUV and the old guy resting-in-between bouts of begging on his rickety-bockety, decrepit wheelchair couldn't be more obvious.
Not that I'm any better to be honest, I see this guy weaving in and out of traffic everytime I go and wait on a bus, just up from my flat. I have yet to give him any pesos either, but he does seem to limit himself to motorists, rather than pedestrians!
Or maybe it's because I've seen him get out of his wheelchair to stretch his legs!!
If you were to give money to every beggar that you met on the streets here in Mexico, you'd be quickly broke.
And it's amazing how quickly you come to view w/scepticism their motives for doing so. It's not as if Mexico doesn't have it's own equivalent of those Romanian Beggarwomen Gangs!
