Ramblings and Mutterings

It's back!

It's great to have rugby back! Our first home match of the season today against Carmarthen Quins, and we came out with a win 44-5. The result looks like it was convincing but after scoring an early try we then didn't score anything until right before half time. But hey a wins a win and I'll take that as its still early days in the league.

There was some stand out performances Chris Morgans at scrum half was Man of the Match, our young front row of Owain Ford, Ashleigh James and James Reeves played well, and there was a great cameo towards the end from Dean Howells, our young centre who was very much like Sonny Bill Williams, the All Blacks centre, with his busts up the middle and sublime offloads. One interesting side note was to see a well known Swansea Jack, Richard Webster on our touchline as Neath Coach, it felt kind of strange but we welcome him to the Gnoll.

The Welsh Premiership, which is the level underneath regional rugby in Wales, has been in the spotlight this week as it was effectively ring fenced from next season for the following three seasons. That means that teams like Pontypool, Bridgend and today's visitors the Quins are relegated without even playing a match. The Premiership has taken a great deal of stick over the past couple of years for supposedly not delivering results; results meaning success for the Welsh national team. But take a look at the players that have come through from the Premiership, James Hook, Jamie Roberts, Leigh Halfpenny, Sam Warburton and many, many more.

I'm not going to debate the rights or wrongs of that decision; I only hope that we get it right for Welsh rugby. Tomorrow sees the debut of Wales in Rugby World Cup 2011 against South Africa, Good Luck to the Boys!
