Singapore Slings
Steve was across from the Stirling office and flies back tomorrow. He doesn't drink much, so we decided to make his "one" drink special; a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar at Raffles (blip above).
I should have three problems with this:
1. The Singapore Sling is a pink, frothy, girly abomination which is a waste of it's individual ingredients (30ml Gin, 15 ml Cherry Brandy, 120 ml Pineapple Juice, 15 ml Lime Juice, 7.5 ml Cointreau, 7.5 ml Dom Benedictine, 10 ml Grenadine, a dash of Angostura Bitters, and garnish with a slice of pineapple and a cherry);
2. This Long Bar is not the one which played host to Ernest Hemingway, Somerset Maugham, Rudyard Kipling, or Noel Coward. It was only built during the 1990 Raffles refurbishment; and,
3. Today is the Moon Festival and I was going to see the lanterns on River Valley Road.
But..... it was a good laugh and I don't do it too often; theme pubs don't get much better.
To pro-spectively offset this indulgence, the bite to eat for lunch was at an "Economic Rice" shop on Beach Road. This was close to classic Singapore; being served by a guy (no doubt with a Steven Fry IQ) taking orders in four different languages, uncle frying up a storm in the back, a twinkly eyed harridan taking your money, great pork and rice, and all for $3.70 inc. GST.
Still love this place.
