Listed (#3): K6 Phone Box, Bedford Place, Alloa
As the reminants of Hurricane Katia had made outdoor Blipping a bit uncomfortable today (a bit like being stuck in a washing machine stuck on a combination fast spin/rinse cycle) I resorted to another Blip in my listed buildings theme as all it required was for me to quickly jump out of the car on the way home from work and grab a shot by the side of the road.
This listed building is a K6 Telephone kiosk outside the former general Post Office in Alloa. This was the first model kiosk to be deployed in large numbers outside of London and was designed for to commemorate the silver jubilee of King George V. So many of these were deployed that they actually designed and built a special trailer to ease installation. I was quite surprised to find this as a listed building but apparently nearly 2000 of these have been listed around the UK.
Telephone kiosks are not exactly heavily used these days and since they are listed it's a bit difficult to know what to do with them if the public don't use them enough to justify British Telecom keeping them (since you can't knock them down). One solution is to allow the public to adopt a kiosk. If you don't want to adopt one you can always buy or hire one. If you are a real payphone 'nerd' there are plenty of websites to pamper your addiction.
PS: Isn't the Internet a wonderful thing for keeping you entertained/informed on a wet evening!
