Nsima Making

Nsima is the staple diet of most Malawians. It is made from maize flour, boiled to death, which produces a sticky, tasteless, consistence of something like failed rice and wallpaper paste. I tell them this, they just laugh and eat heaped plates of it. It's mainly carbohydrate. If I eat Nsima in a village which is not too poor, I might get pumpkin leaves, or an amazing relish made from tomato and onion (then I don't notice the tasteless Nsima!!)
This little girl is no more than 10 or 11 and is cooking the family meal, kept at home from school to look after the family: a very regular occurrence while the boys get school.
Its hard being a girl in Malawi.
