Riding of the whatsits?

So, my friend and I went into town to have a wander when we came upon a bunch of horses on the Royal Mile. Funny how you can live in this city (Edinburgh) and have NO idea of what's going on with things like these. We stayed for a while and then just left, a bit confused.
