Apparently when you re-thatch you bung it in (technical term ;-)) round the bottom first. There is much hammering.

The house is surrounded by a 'strawdrift'. Son Two and I went on a mission to buy a new rotary washing line today because our current one is covered in straw. Thursday's mission will be to put it up.. Oh and we have no television. Well we still have the set, but the straw and the scaffold (poles, not the band) are playing havoc with the Sky dish so the only picture we have is one helpfully telling us no signal is being received. For 8 weeks. Minimum.
