The Falkirk Wheel

I took a little time out of my busy schedule (pronounced Sh NOT Sk - just making a point!) to visit the Falkirk Wheel today. As I was in the area it would have been rude not to and was the suggestion of a colleague who has already visited.

This is a fascinating piece of engineering and my photos do not do it justice at all.

The challenge was to link the Forth and Clyde canal with the Union canal which lies 115ft above it and restore the navigable waterway across Scotland.

It replaced a 1.5 km stretch of 11 locks which had been dismantled for some years, and cost a total of £84.5m back in 2002.

You can take boat trips up and down the lift but time did not permit today.

Certainly worth a visit if you are in the area.

A challenge for you Alf and Chris!!!
