Baker Street
Haven't had a day in London for a while, so I was looking forward to doing some blip hunting on my travels today.
It nearly went horribly wrong as I thought the meeting was at a hotel near Euston that I've been to before for various seminars etc - luckily I thought I'd just check before I left the station and discovered that it was in fact somewhere else, nearer to Euston Square station instead. With my legendary navigation skills, I managed to go in the wrong direction so had a long walk round the block and back to where I started. But it was a lovely day, I needed the exercise and still managed to get there on time so it was all good in the end!
To get to Euston Square in the first place, I went to Baker Street but on a different line to the one I usually find myself on. So I ended up in the old part of Baker Street station and noticed this impressive war memorial to the railway men lost in the First World War. Next to it is a 12inch artillery shell converted to a donation box for the railway benevolent society. Some more details are here.
I love these bits of history that you often come across unexpectedly in London. Seems strange to think of people catching underground trains from Baker Street hundreds of years ago - I've just googled and found out that it opened in 1863!
