The Hardy Tree
Today's song: Rainy Days And Mondays by The Carpenters
'Talking to myself and feeling old.
Sometimes I'd like to quit.
Nothing ever seems to fit.
Hanging around, nothing to do but frown.
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.'
This is the Hardy Tree in St Pancras Gardens where St Pancras Old Church is located. I've been told it's called the Hardy because when Kings Cross Station was about to be built, the bodies buried in the area had to be removed and were re interred in St Pancras Gardens. The young surveyor over seeing the project was Thomas Hardy. The head stones of the previous graves were arranged around this tree and eventually the roots grew around and in between them, creating the present scene.
I live across the road and often come here with my dog, Garbo. It's quite a lovely little park with old tombs scattered around it, including John Soanes tomb, as well as St Pancras Coroner, where recently Amy Winehouse's inquiry was held.
The spot where the church sits is apparently the oldest site of christian worship in Britain. One wall of that long ago first church is still part of the current church which was built in the 1800s when the original burnt down...
