Memories of Douglas Number 12
FAVOURITE FILMS
My late husband Douglas was not a fan of going to the cinema - in fact during the 20 odd years I knew him he never went to the cinema.
He wasn't keen on watching TV either - when we moved in together we didn't even have a TV for the first 6 months or so. He quite liked old black and white British films but never watched them " live" on TV - he preferred to video them and watch them at a time which was more convenient. So we had a large collection of films recorded off the TV. ( He never actually set up the video recorder himself - modern technology and Douglas didn't get on )
However for my blip today I have chosen 3 films which we actually purchased and which we watched many many times.
A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN - starring Tom Hanks, Gina Davis and Madonna.
Douglas loved baseball and we watched many films concerning men''s baseball. However his favourite baseball film was this one about a ladies baseball league formed when the male players went to war.
GETTYSBURG - starring Jeff Daniels, Tom Berenger, Martin Sheen, Maxwell Caulfield, Stephen Laing and many others. ( My personal favourite line in the film is when General Lee asks Brigadier Pickett to rally his Division, Picket replies " But General Lee, I have no division ". So many casualties of war. Great film but very long - 245 mins split into 2 parts.
Douglas was very interested in The American Civil War and when we went on a family holiday to America in 2000 he made sure we chose a coach tour which included a visit to the battlefield and museum at Gettysburg.
GROUNDHOG DAY - starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.
We watched this so often I felt as though I was experiencing Groundhog day myself.
