Croyland Abbey, Wellingborough
A stone inscription states "Croyland Abbey and 200 acres of land was given to the Abbots of Croyland by Edred, king of Mercia in 948. Restored after fire 1281. Reconstructed in the early 17th century.
Croyland Abbey, now Wellingborough Council Offices, was originally a manor house.
The building is named after Croyland Abbey in Lincolnshire for which it was a local monastic grange from the 10th century.
The present structure is Jacobean with later additions. However, visible traces of the medieval grange still exist, perhaps dating from its rebuilding by Abbot Richard in 1281.
