The Little Lyle Files

Burning pocket extinguished

Last weekend we persuaded Becky that we didn't have to spend the entire weekend in a toy section of John Lewis chosing from a small selection of Barbie products as she desperately tried to dispose of her birthday money. Part of the winning argument was the promise of a visit to Toys 'R' Us in the near future, where there would be a wider selection.

What I hadn't paid attention to at the time I presented that commitment was the fact that Mrs W is away this weekend on a Girlie Weekend at Center Parcs. This means that I had to take the kids to the toy emporium alone, which meant that I had to suffer an abnormal amount of time in a pink-lined aisle without the moral support of another adult.

When we went in, the sun was shining but when we came out, the sky was dark grey and ready to emit its load onto us before reaching the car. It was as if someone had turned on a shower above our heads.

That was the second downpour of the day, the other being when the kids were at their swimming lessons this morning and I looked out to see torrential rain coming down at a shallow angle. The problem was that, having gone into the swimming pool in the sunshine, it hadn't crossed my mind to close the sunroof in the car as it being open allowed some much needed ventilation in the sunshine. Is suspect it was open to about the perfect angle to receive a large amount of the torrential downpour straight onto the driver's seat of the car. So, although I hadn't got wet from the rain, I had a very wet bottom as I drove home.
