I apologise now if anyone cold calls for a living.......
"Hi my name's Andy, I'm calling from Vodafone, how are you tonight?"
"Fine"
"I'm glad to hear that, can I ask if you are on a contract or pay as you go?
"You can ask, but I'm not going to tell you"
I don't know why he didn't give up then. I'd love to give you a transcript of the entire conversation but for most of it I was talking over him so it would be quite difficult, plus my memory isn't what it used to be and I've probably forgotten some of the best bits.
I explained that I don't give out personal information over the phone, especially to people I don't know. I explained that if I want the services of Vodafone then I'll contact them. I explained this over and over again.
I actually found the whole phone call a bit bizarre and also quite amusing. I especially enjoyed correcting his misuse of the English language, suggesting the he listens to the recording of the conversation & asks his colleagues when they would have given up and his defensive attitude when he said "well I can't really steal anything off you by knowing what phone network you're on".
I told him that he'd give up before me. And he did. Eventually.
