Brasilian Breakfast
Another shot of our local Wednesday fresh food market. This morning I was there earlier than usual and had decided I'd have breakfast there to enjoy the atmosphere a bit. There's a really popular stand that occupies a corner and it serves fresh, hot pastries filled with cheese or meat (which is actually a bit like haggis!). I went for a cheese one (surprisingly perhaps, being Scottish), served piping hot with a little spicy sauce, washed down with freshly squeezed sugar cane juice - their other speciality. The sticks of sugar cane are pushed into a big funnel type thing where the 'bark' is removed, the cane is squeezed and the juice comes out the other end and it's poured straight into glasses and served. I didn't even know what it was I had ordered to be honest as I just said 'um suco como esta', asking for a fruit juice like everyone else was having. It was then I took notice of the machine which did the squeezing! I squeezed my way in and plonked myself down on one of the little stools and tried to act like a local, while sticking out like a sore thumb! Both pastry and juice were delicious. Roll on next Wednesday.
