Kite, Ettrick Bay
Today was the second annual commemoration of Andrew Blain Baird , known as Baird of Bute, who undertook the first all Scottish heavier than air flight on Bute in September 1910. Chris Markwell has created this event (plus an associated trust which has ambitions for encouraging ambition and innovation) and done it very well indeed .
There was a big crowd at Ettrick Bay today for various happenings, including a fly past and the laying of a wreath at the Baird memorial stone , which I blipped in February this year.
Chris had also provided kites last year for the first commemoration and some were being flown again this year. This one, seen with a misty Arran in the back ground, was particularly colourful and fascinating.
The Hot Air Balloon from Edinburgh University looked great on the lawn of Mount Stuart but alas the wind was too high to let it fly, at least on the first attempt I saw mid afternoon. They were going to try again at 5.00
