Smart in Dallas?

I was lucky enough to park next to a Smart car today when I went to Target. Now, initially I was excited to see it, seeing as that it is only the second Smart car I've seen on this continent (the other one was light pink, which I found kind of ugly). Smart cars are economical and cute, and in Europe, they're perfect. Now, I have to wonder though...is the Smart car really a "smart" automobile in Dallas? Texans, who love to have everything bigger than the next person, are obsessed with SUVs and trucks, and I see more and more Hummers on the road every day. While I love the Smart car, I would be really scared to drive one in Dallas. I think just passing a Hummer on the highway would be cause for the Smart car to fall over in fear. When I studied in Italy last spring I started seeing the ForFour everywhere...a Smart car built for four. They were adorable, and I was totally hoping I'd see them in the states more...they could definitely hold up better if an accident occurred. Sigh, maybe this is a good thing though? A sign that Dallas is headed towards smaller, friendlier cars? Let's hope so.
