WW II Memorial--Slovenia

This morning we finally managed to pick up our rental car (the office was closed when we arrived in Bled yesterday afternoon). We set out on a marvelous excursion into the nearby Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps.

We drove first along the Krma Valley, where we stopped at this utterly modest memorial, honoring local soldiers who fell in World War II. It's about 25 meters from the road, in the midst of a broad meadow with cows grazing. If you view it large, you'll see that it has the birth and death years of the men--a striking personal touch. Altogether, this unpretentious memorial moved me as much as any I've ever experienced. Edit: I've added two enlarged lines with their dates.

After a basic picnic lunch by the stream along the road we drove on to the Vrata Valley, with even more dramatic mountains, and a very high waterfall. Triglav mountain itself (nearly 2900 meters) towers over the end of the road.
