Bridge Too Far

Belhaven Bay bridge, looking towards the Bass Rock (centre) and North Berwick Law (left) ... and something large and ugly off the Fife coast (on the horizon to the right - best seen Large).

Duncan and I set off for Dunbar round the coast and thought we might stop for a lemonade. Luckily we decided not to, because after yesterday's bike disaster I was really struggling to walk and it took us twice as long as usual to get home. My right thigh is pretty locked up as I write. Ah well, better than not going out, these things happen.

We were really aware of the huge thing on the horizon and pretty worried that it's a permanent structure. It ruins the view. When we got to Dunbar, there was a chap walking his dog who was commenting to passers-by on this thing and so I joined him.

"Bloody ugly isn't it?"
"Aye, and it's a right muckle thing."
"Maybe a rig going out?"
"Aye, aye."
"Do you think it's moved?"
"Hmm. mibbe."
"I think it's moved."
"Aye, weel. Have ye seen the May upside down?"
"Eh, what? Upside down?"
"Ah belong here and I've seen it mibbe 5 or 6 times."
"Oh?"
"Aye, if it's flat calm and the sun's shining the May is reflected in the sea. It's beautiful."
"Wow."

So, there's a future blip. And an illustration of how much the view means to people. You can build a bloody useless Community Centre with money we don't have, evicting the Scouts and shutting down our lovely old library in the process, and we'll shrug and mutter a bit. But spoil our view, and we'll band together and reminisce about the 5 or 6 times in 60 years that the sea was that flat that the May was upside down. Aye, aye.

Then chips from the new chip-shop-monopoly (the Italians at Adriano's bought out the other chip shop so the Dunbar deep-fried food market is cornered!) and a gradually slowing hobble home just in time for the children to arrive. "Hello Daddy. You look rough."

Thanks.
