Scramble!
Been busy over the last few days; rugby to be watched and beer to be drunk stuff. Today, after watching Scotland snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, I did some work and then decided I needed to get out. After watching a programme about the bouncing bomb last night I decided to go and grab this shot.
This is a statue at Kings Hill which is a housing estate built on land which was previously RAF West Malling. The statue is of an unnamed RAF pilot of WWII wearing flying gear and running - presumably towards his aircraft. This was a base for fighter squadrons and was in the flight path of enemy bombers heading from the coast to London. Amongst the pilots who spent time based here was Guy Gibson VC who went on to lead Operation Chastise; better known as the Dambuster raid - and there's the link. Gibson's name is remembered in the name of the council buildings on this site and the main thoroughfare is Gibson Drive.
So there ya go - a bit of history for a Sunday night.
