Phoenix nights
And before anyone asks, I was not drinking, I was just stocking up on quinine based medication prior to the ship leaving tomorrow for Brazil ;o)
The Phoenix Bar is some thing of an institution in Dundee, a bar of that name operated on the site 150 years ago. hunting around on t'internet I found the following review;
"The Phoenix has been under the present owner for over twenty years and has steadily built up into the institution that it is. Prior to this it had several years as the Town and Gown before reverting to the original name. The stained glass windows would look a work of art on their own, it if were not for the fact that they are outshone by the many original paintings on every conceivable piece of wallspace. A Hewson original, along with several of his sketches fight for space amongst a great many local artists.
The trinkets around the pub are a story in themselves. A teapot sculpted in the shape of a "Wallace's Peh" a long-gone Dundee delicacy which ranks alongside Marmalade and Dundee Cake for health-giving qualities is just one of the small items you might notice.
The bull's head on the wall, Lavandero, was brought from Cordoba, others bring back castanets, bottles of Rioja or Legionnaires Disease, but this is certainly different. The plaque below takes a little bit of explaining but involves the introduction of zero into western mathematics. Honestly!
With nick-names for customers which are no less subtle than the price list, this is a friendly bar in the city centre and one well worth a visit if ever in Dundee. Just don't say if you are in Camera, even if the pub did win 2nd prize in Pub of the Year in 2010 to a part-time bar."
