14th century packhorse bridge

This arched bridge crosses the River Nene to the east of Irthlingborough.
It consists of ten ribbed arches and eight cutwaters. One of the cutwaters bears the date 1668, probably the time of some repair.
The bridge was widened in 1754: on a stone of one of the cutwaters are the arms of Peterborough Monastery. Possibly a bit of purloined masonery!
This bridge is no longer used as the main river crossing but there is a "new" bridge carrying the A6 running parallel.
