Medical Marijuana
A quick snap of a group of folks speaking out against a new referendum soon to be enforced in San Jose.
A city of over 1 million people with currently 142 licensed, legal in California, medical marijuana clinics. City government has decided, after a year of deliberation to close them all down and start the process over allowing only 10 total with stringent restrictions. These folks will be collecting signatures to oppose the city's decision in hopes of overturning the referendum. Lots of people who depend on medical marijuana will be going elsewhere for their medication until it's all sorted out.
The city granted the licenses for the current clinics after California Initiative 215 was passed to legalize medical marijuana. The city collects taxes on every sale. Now, they've changed their minds.
Currently, anyone needing medical marijuana must have their doctor's certified permission and obtain a photo ID to make purchases. All clinics have to be licensed with the city. No one's sure what the problem is and the city needs the tax revenue. Since the clinics have been in operation, the black market for marijuana has virtually disappeared and related crime has been dramatically reduced.
San Jose city government is a curious beast...
